Internal Audit Salary in the UAE

Published monthly bands for internal auditor, audit manager and head of internal audit in the UAE, why banking pays differently, and the title nobody reports.

internal audit salary uae

The Robert Walters Middle East Salary Survey 2026 puts a UAE internal auditor at AED 18,000-25,000 a month, an internal audit manager at AED 30,000-45,000 and a head of internal audit at AED 60,000-85,000. In banking and financial services the internal auditor row is higher, at AED 30,000-50,000. Figures are UAE-wide base salary, not Dubai-specific, and exclude allowances and bonus.

#The published monthly bands, by grade

Internal audit is one of the few assurance roles an employer-reported survey does break out by name, which makes this question answerable rather than refusable. The Robert Walters Middle East Salary Survey 2026 carries three grades in commerce and industry — auditor, manager, head of function — and a separate banking table that prices the same work differently.

All figures are monthly, in AED, UAE-wide, and are base salary as reported by employers. They are not Dubai-specific: the survey does not publish emirate-level tables, so anyone quoting a Dubai-only internal audit figure is quoting something else.

#"Internal audit director": the title the survey does not report

A large share of this search asks specifically about a director. There is no internal audit director row in the survey, in Dubai or UAE-wide, and inventing one by interpolation would be dressing a guess as data.

What the survey does report is the rung that most director titles actually occupy: head of internal audit, at AED 60,000-85,000 a month. In UAE practice the two words are used for the same job in different organisations — a group with a single assurance function calls the role head of internal audit, a bank or a large listed group with several audit teams calls the top of each team a director and reserves chief audit executive for the person reporting to the audit committee. Title inflation runs in both directions here, which is exactly why the survey reports functions rather than titles.

If you are pricing a director role, price the reporting line. Reporting to the audit committee or the board puts the role at the head-of-function rung. Reporting to a head of internal audit puts it at or above the manager row of AED 30,000-45,000, and no published source narrows it further than that.

The manager rung, and why it overlaps the banking auditor

The internal audit manager band of AED 30,000-45,000 a month starts at the same point as the banking internal auditor band of AED 30,000-50,000. That is not an anomaly in the data — it is the sector premium showing up as an entire grade. A senior auditor in a bank can be paid what a manager is paid in a trading or industrial group, without managing anyone.

#Why banking and financial services pay differently

The survey publishes internal audit twice because the buyers are different. A regulated financial institution runs an internal audit function against a supervisory expectation, not only a board one, and the scope includes areas — credit risk, treasury, capital, financial crime — that a commerce-and-industry function rarely touches.

That shows in the reported figures: AED 30,000-50,000 a month for a banking internal auditor against AED 18,000-25,000 for the commerce-and-industry equivalent. It also shows in the adjacent compliance rows the same table carries, where a senior compliance officer is reported at AED 35,000-55,000 and a head of compliance at AED 70,000-110,000.

The practical reading is that sector, not seniority, is the largest single published driver in this occupation. A move from an industrial group to a bank at the same grade is reported as a bigger step than one promotion inside the same sector.

#What the job is, and what it is not

Internal audit is a management assurance function reporting to a board or audit committee. It is not the statutory audit an external firm signs, and confusing the two is the fastest way to misread both the pay and the licensing position.

The external audit profession is regulated: Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2023 on the Regulation of the Accounting and Auditing Profession governs practice, and Article 8(2) prohibits use of the "Chartered Accountant" designation without a Ministry professional licence — it restricts the words themselves, so a CV headline engages it. Registration as a practising auditor with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, and the post-qualification experience conditions in Cabinet Resolution No. 48 of 2022, apply to that side of the profession.

Internal audit carries no UAE licence at all for holding the role in-house. The recognised credential is the Institute of Internal Auditors' Certified Internal Auditor, a professional-body qualification rather than a state authorisation, and the IIA's Global Internal Audit Standards are the framework a function is measured against. Nothing in UAE law requires a private company to appoint an internal auditor by that title, which is why the job's shape varies so widely between employers.

#What the band leaves out of the package

A reported base salary is not the offer. UAE packages carry housing, transport and often schooling allowances alongside the basic wage, and the split is the part that has legal consequences.

End-of-service gratuity accrues on the basic wage only — Articles 51(2) and 51(5) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 exclude allowances from the calculation — so two offers with the same headline are not worth the same after four years. For wage purposes, Article 67 of the same law fixes a month at 30 days and a year at 365. The wage is payable in dirhams unless the employment contract agrees another currency, under Article 22(3), and all deductions combined are capped at 50% of the wage by Article 25(2).

On the way in, the wage runs through the Wages Protection System: under the Wage Protection System resolution published by the Government Portal, last month's wage falls due on the first day of each Gregorian month, and at least 85% of total wages must transfer on time where lawful deductions apply.

Nothing is withheld for income tax. The Government Portal states that the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, and corporate tax under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022 reaches businesses and natural persons carrying on a business, not employment income.

#What this page will not put a number on

Three things get asked here that no accessible source answers, and each is stated rather than estimated.

Employer-specific pay. No survey publishes what a named company pays. Figures attached to a named UAE bank or group online come from self-reported aggregator entries with an unverifiable sample, frequently mixing monthly and annual amounts.

Bonus and long-term incentive. The survey rows above are base salary. Bonus practice in UAE internal audit varies from nil to a substantial multiple at head-of-function level, and no publisher we could open reports it by grade for this market.

A premium for the CIA qualification, or for any other. Surveys report by role and seniority, never by qualification, so a stated uplift for holding a certification is not a figure anyone publishes — it is inferred, and usually inferred from a sample of one.

What you can do instead is check the two ends of your own case: the published rung for the reporting line you would hold, and the actual written offer. The distance between them is the negotiation, and it is specific to you rather than to a national average.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of an internal auditor in the UAE?

The Robert Walters Middle East Salary Survey 2026 reports AED 18,000 to 25,000 a month for an internal auditor in commerce and industry, with an average of AED 21,500. In banking and financial services the same survey reports AED 30,000 to 50,000. Both are UAE-wide base salary bands for permanent roles and exclude allowances, bonus and benefits.

What does an internal audit manager earn in the UAE?

AED 30,000 to 45,000 a month, with a stated average of AED 37,500, according to the Robert Walters Middle East Salary Survey 2026. The band starts where the banking internal auditor band starts, which is why a senior auditor inside a bank can be paid what a manager is paid in an industrial group without managing a team.

What does an internal audit director earn in Dubai?

No survey we could open publishes an internal audit director band, and none publishes Dubai separately from the rest of the UAE. The nearest reported title is head of internal audit at AED 60,000 to 85,000 a month. Price a director role by its reporting line: to the audit committee puts it at the head-of-function rung, to a head of internal audit puts it above the manager band.

Do you need a licence to work in internal audit in the UAE?

No UAE licence exists for holding an in-house internal audit role. The recognised credential is the Institute of Internal Auditors' Certified Internal Auditor, which is a professional-body qualification rather than a state authorisation. Licensing applies on the external side of the profession, under Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2023, which also protects the Chartered Accountant designation.

Is internal audit pay in the UAE taxed?

No income tax is deducted. The Government Portal states that the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, and corporate tax applies to businesses and to natural persons carrying on a business rather than to employment income. Other lawful deductions can apply but are capped in total at 50% of the wage by Article 25(2) of the Labour Law.
